After a study group discussion I realised that I didn't know much about how bone mineral density is measured so I researched it, finding that a DEXA scan calculates the ratio between bony and fat content within a bone creating 2 scores: a T score which relates to how far the person is away from the optimum BMD at the optimum age and the Z score which relates to a comparison of the average BMD for someone of the same age and sex.
